10. Authorities V
Ten Authorities V is the fifth installment of the Ten Authorities series, a series of blog posts in which I examine different aspects of the paranormal and try to offer some answers based on my research. Today, I’d like to take a look at one of the most famous cases of human remains being found in unusual places: the case of Summer and Wells.
In August of 2002, the body of Summer Wells was found in a septic tank on a property in rural Ohio. Wells had been missing for six months, and her body was so badly decomposed that authorities were only able to identify her through dental records. The cause of death was determined to be strangulation.
While the case of Summer Wells is tragic, it’s not particularly unusual. What is unusual, however, is the case of Wells’ companion, William “Billy” Balfour.
Balfour was also missing, and his body was found in an abandoned well on the same property as Wells. Balfour’s body was in a state of advanced decomposition, and authorities were only able to identify him through DNA testing. The cause of death was also determined to be strangulation.
So, what happened to Summer and Wells?
The most likely scenario is that they were both victims of a serial killer. There have been several cases of serial killers targeting couples, and it’s possible that the killer(s) responsible for the deaths of Summer and Wells fit this profile.
Another possibility is that the two were killed by different people. It’s possible that Wells was killed by her companion, Balfour, and that he was then killed by someone else. This scenario is less likely, however, as there would have been no reason for Balfour to kill Wells and then hide her body in a septic tank.
Whatever the case may be, the deaths of Summer and Wells remain a mystery. There are no suspects and no leads in the case, and it’s unlikely that we’ll ever know what happened to them.
